ECOMMERCE SOLUTION FOR AUTO PARTS - TYRES

Background

The Customer, a reseller of the European wholesaler, decided to open his own eCommerce website for car tires and rims. Warehousing and delivery services were provided by the wholesaler.

Challenge

The project challenge was to meet a deadline, with regard to a seasonal market.

The infrastructure was outsourced to the wholesaler that meant a lot of integration points, when 99% of the data (goods availability, costs, delivery information, etc.) was saved on the wholesaler side.

Moreover, a flexible mechanism to manage discounts and bonuses had to be implemented. The project started in the beginning of February and had to be delivered not later than in the middle of April, when a summer season started.

SOLUTION

The Drupal7 and Ubercart ecommerce solutions were chosen as a code base for the project. Unfortunately, the integration interfaces for the warehousing and delivery services were under active development, thus, 1Datagroup developers had to introduce an abstraction layer upon Drupal.

With such an approach, the specialists were able to focus on the major project parts – a product catalogue and “smart” search, bonus and discount management from the product discovery stage till the checkout.

Another difficult aspect was a UI design, which was implemented far before the requirements finalization.

Eventually, 1Datagroup developers had some points where the design was contradicting the requirements.

To avoid the risks here, the specialists gained the approval to use the design as a kind of a visual guide collecting some parts of the design as the visual abstract primitives. That helped a lot on the later stages.

Thus, in the middle of March1Datagroup released the version that had major functionality implemented, and the remaining month was spent for the integration tasks.

The finalized integration interfaces differed from the initial vision that was before the project start. However, due to the abstraction layer, it didn’t affect anyhow the core functionality.

Taking into account all these circumstances, 1Datagroup specialists released the production version in the middle of April, as scheduled.

RESULTS

The project was successfully accomplished in 10 months. Resulting in 1Datagroup specialists developing a flexible web-based solution that helped to significantly improve the network efficiency.
